Steven Schamel - Candidate for President-Elect

Steven Schamel, Ph.D. is a Principal with GeoX Consulting, Inc. in Salt Lake City.  Until recently he was Research Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Utah and Associate Director of the Petroleum Research Center in the Department of Chemical Engineering.  With funding principally from the petroleum industry and the DOE, he has pursued a diverse research program that includes basin and petroleum systems analysis; regional hydrocarbon resource assessment; GIS-based, Web-enabled geoscience database design and implementation; unconventional gas resource appraisal; reservoir characterization; and enhanced oil recovery strategies.  He is the author of approximately 30 published papers and over 60 technical reports.  He was trained at Franklin & Marshall College and Yale University, and held various research and teaching positions on the East Coast before moving to the University of Utah in 1995.  Steven has been a UGA member since 2002.

David E. Tabet – Candidate for President-Elect

David Tabet is the manager of the Energy and Minerals Program for the Utah Geological Survey, which he joined in 1992, and conducts research on coal and coal-bed gas deposits.  Previously, he worked as a coal geologist for the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, ARCO Coal Company, and for clients as a consultant.  He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from the University of Wisconsin, and an M.B.A. from the University of Colorado.  David has been a UGA member since 1993.

N. Brett Mustoe – Candidate for Program Chair

Brett Mustoe attended Brigham Young University and received B.S. (1988) and M.S. (1994) degrees in geology.  His M.S. thesis work focused on the use of geophysics to assess earthquake hazards on the Wasatch fault zone near Provo and Springville, Utah.  Mr. Mustoe has presented papers at the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in Dallas (1989) and Salt Lake City (2002), and at several Symposia on Engineering Geology and Geotechnical Engineering (1989 and 1991).  He has also co-authored several papers, including two in UGA Publication 24.   

 Brett is a registered Professional Geologist in Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah and currently works at URS, where he is principal geologist.  His work interests include subsurface investigation, hydrogeology, environmental and engineering geophysics, and geologic hazards.  He has prior work experience in the oil and gas industry (Rocky Mountains, Denver-Julesburg Basin, Uintah Basin/San Rafael Swell, and Columbia Basin) and mineral exploration (Cascade Range and Great Basin).  Brett has been a UGA member since 1997.

Bradley D. Ritts – Candidate for Program Chair

 Brad Ritts is an Assistant Professor at Utah State University, where he teaches courses in sedimentary geology, petroleum geology and tectonics.  He received his B.S. degree from the University of Rochester (1993), M.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1994), and Ph.D. from Stanford University (1998).  Before moving to Utah in 1999, Brad worked as an exploration geologist in the New Ventures Business Unit of Chevron Overseas Petroleum.  His research focuses on nonmarine basin analysis and petroleum systems, and continental intraplate tectonics.  His current projects are in northern China, the Tibetan Plateau, and the Uinta Basin.  Brad became a member of AAPG in 1992, and the UGA in 1999.

Craig D. Morgan – Candidate for Treasurer

Craig received his B.S. degree in geology from the University of Utah and has worked for Tooke Engineering, UV Industries, and Wexpro/Celcius Energy Company.  He is currently employed by the Utah Geological Survey.  Past UGA activities include newsletter editor, Secretary, AAPG Delegate, and serving on several field trip committees.  Craig is a member of AAPG, RMAG, and the UGA since 1979.

C. Charles Payton – Candidate for Treasurer

Charles Payton received a M.S. degree in geology from the University of Oregon and began his professional career with the Portland District of the U.S. Corps of Engineers as an engineering geologist.  He worked on several of the large dams in western Oregon both during exploration and design as well as during construction.  After 6 years, he joined the central engineering staff at Kennecott Copper and was involved in rock slope design, tailings dams, and mine planning.  He then joined Morrison -Knudsen Corp. and worked as a principal engineering geologist and manager of the geology/hydrology department for Morrison Knudsen Engineers in San Francisco, California.  He was able to work on several mining and water resource development projects not only in the United States but in Indonesia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Nicaragua.  Prior to establishing his own company in 1995, he worked approximately four years with Dames & Moore in Salt Lake City, Utah and Anchorage, Alaska.  His own company was called American Geological Services and he provided geologic support for mining companies, developers, and geotechnical engineering companies.  In 2000 in joined Amec Earth & Environmental in Salt Lake City, where he worked for approximately three years.  Since 2003, he has again been an independent engineering geologist using the name of Payton Geological Services.  Charles also has been an adjunct professor at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah, where he teaches introduction to geology classes.

 Charles (Chuck) is married and has three children, six grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.  He lives in Provo, Utah.  Chuck has been a UGA member since 1974.

David W. Christiansen – Candidate for Secretary

David Christiansen graduated with a B.S. in geology in 1984 from Brigham Young University (BYU).  David started his career as a geologist for the Goldstrike Mine near Elko Nevada.  Later he worked in mineral exploration in Nevada for Meyers Exploration Resources.  In 1990, David graduated from BYU with an M.S. in hydrogeology.  Following graduation, David worked for Hargis and Associates in San Diego, California where he began a career in environmental geology with his first assignment to work on the Montrose Superfund site, the site of a former DDT manufacturing facility.  David continues to be involved in environmental geology and has been self-employed as a consultant for nine years doing business as Applied Geoscience and Environmental.  David has been a UGA member since 1996.

David J. Lambert – Candidate for Secretary

David received his B.S. degree in Geology from Brigham Young University in 1971 and a M.S. degree in Geology from Brigham Young University in 1975.  David worked for Getty Oil Company (mineral division) in Salt Lake City from 1972 to 1973.  After receiving a M.S. degree, he moved to Midland, Texas and began work in oil and gas exploration for Gulf Oil.  David went to work for Samedan Oil, now Nobel Energy, in Denver in 1978 as an exploration and production geologist covering the Rocky Mountain States.  He moved to Oklahoma City as Regional Manager of the Mid-continent Division in 1990 and in 1991 moved to Houston, TX as Manager of Exploitation of Onshore U.S. and later as Exploration Manager of both the Mid-continent and Rocky Mountain Region.

David is a member of AAPG, RMAG, and the Oklahoma Independent Producers Association, and a Licensed Professional Geologist in the state of Utah.  David has been an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America for 28 years.  David is a new member of UGA (2004).
